The South West Secure Data Environment (SDE) is the new name for the Great Western SDE. This change of name reflects the SDE’s geographic area in plainer, more recognisable language.
The change of name was approved by NHS England in June, alongside confirmation of the SDE’s funding until March 2025.
The South West SDE footprint closely matches the region covered by NHS England – South West and South Western Ambulance Service. However, Dorset, which is in the NHS England – South West region, is part of the neighbouring Wessex SDE.
The South West and Wessex SDEs work closely together to share learning and collaborate on elements of the programme.
Dr Charlie Kenward, Research Clinical Lead at Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire Integrated Care Board (BNSSG ICB) and a local Bristol GP, leads the South West SDE. He said:
“Our new name is an example of how we have responded to public feedback. We hope this will help significantly when engaging with the public on what is a complicated topic. It has certainly gone down well with our public contributors.
“The South West SDE is a name that more clearly reflects the patch that we cover, and better matches the other health and care structures in our region. I would like to thank our colleagues in Dorset and the Wessex SDE for supporting this change.”
